Tournament History

Past Tournament Winners

In 1993 Bill Reemtsma, USAFA '63, founder and chairman of the Service Academy Golf Classic, had a dream. His desire to create a unique NCAA sanctioned golf tournament featuring Cadets and Midshipmen from the four Service Academies became a reality when he secured the backing of USAA as the title sponsor. The U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy accepted invitations and competed in the first tournament at The Four Seasons Resort and Club TPC Course.  Army won the inaugural event in a blinding snow storm.  Over $12,500 was divided among the participating teams.

Graduates, friends and the participating golf teams enjoyed the event so much that Bill decided to continue the tournament the following year despite the loss of his title sponsor. The second tournament was held at the Dallas Athletic Club with the help of donations from local businessmen and friends of the academies. Hampered by rain, Army again won the tournament.  This year $15,000 was divided among the participating teams.

On March 18, 1995, Bill passed away. Local graduates and friends of the academies decided to continue with Bill's dream, hosting the third annual tournament at the Dallas Athletic Club. By now the U.S. Naval Academy had joined the competition. Air Force emerged as the winner this year, once again in rainy elements. Increased donations generated $5,000 for each academy athletic department.

Because of Bill Reemtsma's unselfish and tireless efforts in making The Service Academy Golf Classic a success, the Bill Reemtsma Memorial Trophy is awarded to each year's winning team for prominent display in their school. It was Bill's dream that this tournament continue in the years to come, and with your continued support his dream will be reality.

2006 marked the final year for the Service Academy Golf Classic in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  It has been a great run, but plans are under way to move next year's tournament to the Washington, DC area to expand the opportunity for fund raising with a bigger and better event.  Please visit this web site regularly to keep up to date and to register for SAGC 2007.  Pass the word!

2006 - Air Force put an exclamation point on their domination of the Service Academy Golf Classic by winning for the 12th straight year by an 11 stroke margin over second place Army.  A final round 66 by Plebe Tom Whitney, Air Force '10, iced what had been a close match after 36 holes.  Whitney's 66 marks the lowest single round in SAGC tournament history!  Tyler Goulding, Air Force '07, backed up his Falcon teammate with the only other sub-par effort during the last round, firing a 69.  Tom's three round total of 210 secured the Nick Stafford Medalist Trophy by five strokes - expect to hear his name in the future...   Kings Point was unable to attend this year because of exam conflicts.  The All Service Academy Team, in addition to Tom Whitney and Tyler Goulding, included Sam Walenz, Army '09, Joey Cave, Army '08, Ryan Wielgus, Navy '09, Erich Schoen, Navy '08, Matt Hanlon, Army '08, Jeremy Garner, Navy '07 and and Shaun O'Bryant, Air Force '09.  (NCAA Scores)

2005 - Army won the battle with Medalist Pat Beverly '08 edging Tyler Labrum, Air Force '08, by two strokes, but for the 11th straight year Air Force won the war.  Plebe Sam Walenz, Army '09, posted a tournament low round of 67, serving notice for the next three years, but unable to rally the Black Knights any closer than 13 strokes.  Navy finished well back in third place.  Kings Point continues to dramatically improve their program, with all first round scores at least 10 strokes lower per player than last year.  Nick Zoretic '08 posted a low round of 75.  Just when it looked like the Mariners had been spending too much time on the practice tee and not enough time in the library, Coach Bill McCumiskey packed up the team and returned them home for Mid-Terms.  That's why if attending a Service Academy was easy, everyone would do it.  Rounding out the All Service Academy Team behind Beverly and Labrum was Tyler Goulding, Air Force '07, Austin Luher,  Army '06, Sam Walenz, Robert Whitney, Air Force '08 and Scott Redmond, Air Force '06.   (NCAA Scores)

2004 - With the continuing great venue at Trophy Club Golf Course in Roanoke, TX, the 12th Annual Service Academy Golf Classic saw Army and Air Force keep it neck-and-neck for three hard fought rounds.  Navy and the Merchant Marines fell back early, and were unable to rally.  With a last round press by the Black Knights, the Falcons managed to hang on to a three point margin during the incoming nine, keeping control of the Reemtsma Trophy with a total of 1108.  Navy finished third, with the Merchant Marines, showing they can go low in individual rounds, coming in fourth.  Army's Scott Manley '05 captured the Nick Stafford Medalist Trophy with a three over par total of 219.  Tied for first with Scott was Ben Jackman '07 of Air Force, losing the medalist tie-breaker by virtue of Scott's last round two-under 70 to his even par 72.  Braxton Mashburn '05 led the individual efforts for the Midshipmen with a 225 total, while Nicholas Zoretic '08 paced Kings Point with a 253.   Scott Brandt shot a 76 for Kings Point in the last round, and headed straight for the practice tee to get ready for 2005.  In addition to Manley and Jackman, Austin Luher, Air Force '06, Kala'e "Chris" Leong, Air Force '05, Tyler Goulding, Air Force '07, D.J. Reeves, Army '06, and Tyler Labrum, Air Force '08, were named to the All Service Academy Golf Classic Team.   (NCAA Scores)

2003 - The 11th Annual Service Academy Golf Classic, hosted for the third straight year at Trophy Club, saw Air Force build a commanding lead during the first round on Saturday.  Navy and Army tried to close the gap, but were unable to overcome the deficit.  Air Force won going away with a team score of three over par 1083, followed by Navy at 1103 with Army charging at 1111.  The Merchant Marines continue building their golf program, showing signs of regaining their competitive position.  Navy's Billy Hurley '04 shattered the tournament record by seven strokes posting a 54 hole total of 14 under par 202!  This continues an incredible year as Billy burst on the collegiate and national golf scene.  Jarett Hamamoto '06 led the individual efforts for the Falcons with 214 total, while Mark Erwin '05 paced the Black Knights with a 219.  In addition to Hurley, Hamamoto and Erwin, Scott Redmond, Air Force '06, Tyler Goulding, Air Force '07, Tim Thoren, Air Force '04, D.J. Reeves, Army '06 and Joey Kistler, Navy '04 were named to the All Service Academy Golf Classic Team.   (NCAA Scores)

2002 - Back to Trophy Club for the 10th Annual Service Academy Golf Classic, Army built a two stroke advantage over Air Force following the morning first round, which the Falcons promptly reversed in the afternoon.   This match was electric and undecided until the 53rd hole, with Air Force edging the Black Knights by just five strokes.   Army fielded four Plebes and three Yearlings as an unbelievable building block for the future!   Navy was unable to make up the first day deficit, finishing third.  With a program that continues to improve dramatically each year, the Merchant Marines finished 59 strokes better than last year!  Matching that improvement each of the next two years will put them in the winner's circle in 2004.  Adam Wasinger, the Falcons much improved sophomore, took home the Nick Stafford Trophy as tournament medalist, serving notice that he is the man to beat for the next two years.   Brandon Daum, Air Force '03, gave Adam a run to the end finishing second by two strokes.  Pete Phipps, Army '05, finished third another stroke back.  Rob Stochel, Navy '04 and Dan Dugan, Merchant Marines '04, set the pace for their respective teams.  (NCAA Scores)

2001 - This year saw the return of the tournament to Trophy Club in Roanoke, Texas, with play over the distinctly different Hogan and Hills courses.  Army made a move early, holding a two stroke advantage over favored Air Force after the first round.   The depth of the Falcons and their experience on the Trophy Club track made it tough for the others to hang on, as Air Force stretched their ownership of this tournament to 7 straight years.   Ben Leestma four-peated as medalist, with last year's runner up Billy Hurley of Navy again finishing second.  Billy kept it in doubt through 45 holes, fading at the end to finish 6 stokes back.  Army , led by senior Ryan Hazelton, held on to second by a stroke over Navy.   The Merchant Marines, as predicted, continue to improve their program finishing 10 strokes better than last year on a much tougher layout.  Sophomores Jeff Zamarin and Dan Dugan set the pace for Kings Point with steady, improved play.  (NCAA Scores)

2000 - Please see 1995 - 1999.  Same song, 6th verse - "Air Force Keeps Stranglehold!"  This year's track moved to the Hyatt Bear Creek Resort at DFW Airport, a 2 course layout of championship caliber with tight fairways and tiered greens.  Although the other academies kept the match in doubt until midway through the last round, Air Force held off their foes by a 16 stroke margin.  Ben Leestma emerged as medalist for the third straight year, besting runner up Navy plebe Billy Hurley by 10 strokes.  Navy held the advantage over Army by 23 strokes for second place.  The Merchant Marines, staying with their "Four Freshmen" strategy from the prior year, continue to show promise.  Plebe Dan Dugan fired a 78 on the last day, matching similar rounds posted by All Tournament team members.  Look out for Kings Point in two years!  (NCAA Scores)

1999 - OK, so what's new?  Air Force continued to fly high during three days of great golf, great weather and great fun.  From the back tees Trophy Club flexed her muscles to drive scores up from last year, but with the pressure on, Air Force dominated by a 22 stroke margin.  Ben Leestma defended his medalist title, serving notice that some strong recruiting classes are in order to unseat him in the future.  Army edged Navy by 3 strokes for second place.  The Merchant Marines sent a wake up call through the "Four Freshmen" that their program is on the rise, and with a few stray scores cleaned up next year will be a force to reckon with!  (NCAA Scores)  (Alumni/Friends Scores)

1998 - continued the "Air Force Dynasty", although closely contested by Navy.  Ben Leestma of Air Force - a mere plebe yet - showed the big boys what a good high school golf program can develop.  Ben was the winner of the first Nick Stafford Trophy as medalist, in honor of our good friend and a driving force behind the success of this tournament.  (NCAA Scores)

1997 - Trophy Club again played host to the fifth annual tournament, as Air Force continued its hold on the championship trophy.  Still something about final round weather that has yet to be resolved ...

1996 - The fourth annual tournament (1996) was held at Trophy Club over the Arthur Hills and Ben Hogan courses. Air Force prevailed again, this year in beautiful Texas weather - until the last morning.
